There is a beautiful song my friends, that goes like this:-
“In times like these you need a Savior,
In times like these you need an anchor;
Be very sure, be very sure
Your anchor holds and grips the solid Rock!”
Dear friends, this statement is so very true, Jesus is our Saviour and yes Jesus is our anchor. Let’s have a quick look at what the word ‘anchor’ actually means and how we can attribute it to our lives.
According to the dictionary a anchor is:-
“A person or thing that provides stability or confidence in an otherwise uncertain situation.”
Let’s go now and have a quick look at the internet search engine.
So our question to and our answer from the internet is:-
“What does it mean to be somebodies anchor?
It means you will support someone emotionally when they are in a time of distress. It is a metaphor comparing how an anchor stops a ship being driven on the rocks, so shall a person stop another becoming depressed or anxious through problems they have in their life.”
Let’s now compare these definitions with our beautiful Saviour.
Isaiah 41:10 “Fear thou not; for I am with thee: be not dismayed; for I am thy God: I will strengthen thee; yea, I will help thee; yea, I will uphold thee with the right hand of my righteousness.”
Psalm 9:9 “The LORD also will be a refuge for the oppressed, a refuge in times of trouble.”
Psalm 23:1-6 “The Lord is my Shepherd; I shall not want. He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters. He restoreth my soul: he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for His name’s sake. Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me. Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over. Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the Lord for ever.”
Here we can see a clear parallel between the dictionary, the internet definition and the Bible, Jesus is our anchor. Dear friends don’t for a moment think you are being tossed about and lost in the storms at sea. Just as all boats always carry anchors so too Jesus is always by our side.
Picture, if you will, yourself on a ship way out to sea. During the night a fierce storm hits, the ship is tossed about like a feather in the wind, there is no controlling the boat. Everyone pulls for the shore and just when all hope is lost the ship slides into a little cove. The very first thing the pilot does is to drop anchor to steady the ship. Everyone goes to thank the pilot, only to find he isn’t on deck. Who saved the ship? Yes friends it was Jesus, Jesus was the pilot and the anchor. Jesus guided the ship into the cove and Jesus dropped the anchor, He held and anchored us all during the storm, all through the night Jesus was at the helm guiding us to a safe port. So too Jesus will pilot and anchor you my friend, just put your hand in His and your faith into His guidance and tender mercy.
There is a very beautiful Bible verse friends that I believe highlights the above allegory. Psalm 46:1 “…God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.” Jesus is always there my friends, never for a moment doubt, Jesus is our anchor and when the storms threaten to overwhelm us and the waves threaten to wash us overboard and sink the ship, look to Jesus. Put up your hand and look to our beautiful Saviour, Jesus is our pilot and our anchor. Jesus will guide our ship safely through the tempest and safely to shore.
Jesus loves us so much He gave His life for our salvation, He will never leave His beloved to flounder, His passionate love and watchcare is always with us. Put your trust in Him my friend, and no matter the problem Jesus will carry us through.
Amen
